The Excellence Framework Europe (EFE)
A European framework for understanding, assessing and developing organisational capabilities
The Excellence Framework Europe (EFE) is an open, practice-oriented and community-driven European management framework that supports organisations in strengthening their capabilities, enhancing their impact and improving their future readiness.
It provides a shared European reference model and a common language that help organisations understand, assess and develop the capabilities required for long-term success.
In an environment characterised by accelerating change, increasing complexity and growing expectations from stakeholders and society, organisations need more than operational efficiency. They require strong leadership, clear strategic orientation and the ability to continuously learn, adapt and evolve.
The framework offers a structured perspective on how leadership, strategy, people, partnerships and innovation interact to create sustainable value and impact. It builds on decades of European excellence practice while responding to the evolving challenges faced by organisations in a rapidly changing environment.
Developing organisational capabilities
At the heart of the Excellence Framework Europe lies the idea that sustainable success depends on the capabilities of an organisation — its ability to align people, resources, processes and partnerships towards a shared purpose and strategic direction.
The framework therefore focuses on developing organisational capabilities and their contribution to value creation, impact and future readiness.
Organisations use the framework to:
• understand the key drivers of long-term success
• reflect on their organisational maturity
• identify strengths and development opportunities
• strengthen leadership and strategic alignment
• support learning, innovation and transformation
Rather than prescribing a specific management method, the framework provides a shared reference for reflection, dialogue and organisational development.
A holistic view of organisational excellence
The Excellence Framework Europe provides an integrated view of organisations and the factors that shape their capabilities, impact and long-term value creation.
At the core of the framework is the EFE Hexagon, which highlights six interconnected capability areas that together shape organisational excellence and future readiness.
The six areas of the Excellence Framework Europe are:
A – Provide orientation
B – Develop strategy
C – Shape collaboration
D – Create value
E – Demonstrate impact
F – Master change
Together these perspectives support a deeper understanding of how organisations create value and remain capable of adapting and evolving in a changing environment.
Supporting reflection, assessment and improvement
Organisations use the Excellence Framework Europe in different ways depending on their needs and level of maturity.
Typical applications include:
• organisational self-assessments
• independent excellence assessments
• leadership and strategy dialogue
• organisational development initiatives
• transformation and improvement programmes
By linking organisational capabilities with results and impact, the framework helps organisations identify meaningful development priorities and continuously strengthen their future readiness.
ESPRIX and the Excellence Framework Europe
ESPRIX Excellence Suisse promotes organisational excellence and continuous improvement in Switzerland.
In its assessment activities and excellence initiatives, ESPRIX uses the Excellence Framework Europe (EFE) as a methodological reference for analysing organisational capabilities, maturity and impact.
Through assessments, knowledge exchange and the Swiss Excellence Awards, ESPRIX contributes to strengthening excellence and future-ready organisations across sectors.
A European excellence community initiative
The Excellence Framework Europe is an open and community-driven initiative supported by a European network of excellence organisations and practitioners.
The framework was jointly initiated and developed by three national excellence organisations:
- ESPRIX Excellence Suisse (Switzerland)
- Initiative Ludwig-Erhard-Preis e.V. (Germany)
- Austrian Foundation for Quality Management (Austria)
For more than three decades, these organisations have organised and presented national excellence awards in their respective countries, bringing extensive experience from organisational assessments and excellence development.
Together they established an open European framework for organisational excellence and capability development, providing organisations with a coherent European perspective for understanding, assessing and strengthening their organisational capabilities.
The framework continues to evolve through collaboration within the European excellence community and is accessible to organisations of all sizes and sectors.
